Isoroku Yamamoto

Yamamoto spent nearly a decade in the United States between 1919 and 1928. He learned English at Harvard University and later served as an admiral’s aide in the United States. His low opinion of the abilities of U.S. naval officers convinced him that a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor would be successful.

On his return to Japan, Yamamoto worked his way up to becoming one of the most important aviation officers in the Naval Air Corps. As commander in chief of the Combined Japanese Fleet, Yamamoto believed aircraft carriers were more effective weapons in war than battleships. Although his attack on Pearl Harbor was seen as a great victory, he later lost important battles against the Americans at Midway Island and the Solomon Islands, due in part to battle plans that were too complicated to carry out successfully. During a tour of Japanese bases in the South Pacific in April 1943, American forces shot down Yamamoto’s plane, and he was killed. He did not live to see Japan’s total defeat more than two years later.
